Just kidding, don’t get pissed. This hose does suck, however, but it’s supposed to, so it’s OK. Specifically, it’s a new GrimmSpeed post-MAF hose kit and it just arrived today. In case you have no idea what a post-MAF hose is and why anyone would want one, let me explain. What this hose is is an aftermarket replacement for the OEM hose that connects the airbox/filter housing of the BRZ’s intake system to the throttle body/intake manifold of the engine. Why you would want to change the original hose is fairly simple – if you look at it you’ll notice it’s corrugated and it also has a resonator attached as well. Because of this design the airflow coming from the airbox into the engine becomes turbulent and doesn’t flow smoothly which objectively isn’t a good thing and means you’re losing power and throttle responsiveness as a result. The new hose fixes this problem by being completely smooth inside and also eliminating the small step that is created at the hose’s connection points where it fits over the plastic parts it’s connecting.
Now, how much benefit you’re going to gain by replacing the OEM hose is up for grabs. So far, I haven’t seen any before/after dyno results yet, so it’s entirely possible you’ll gain nothing, but I suspect that there will be something there to show for the effort, and likely it’s going to be more about responsiveness and feel than outright power. I’m also sure that if you tune for the new part you’ll see a somewhat better result than just running the stock tune, but again how much is unknown. If anything, you’ll at least get some improved intake sound to enjoy as you tool around since the OEM resonator is missing. That doesn’t suck, so there you go.
That’s it for now. I fully plan on writing up an actual review once I have the hose installed, so keep an eye out for it in the near future.
