I’ve Been Spoiled

NGL, this one had me shitting bricks for a short while. Not that anything went wrong – in fact it went perfectly, but I had to drill into my car, man, and that’s kinda scary. No going back, so if it didn’t line up the first time, I’d be fucked big time – or at least for a few hundred bucks for a new trunk trim piece. Then again, I did major seat surgery on my driver’s seat to cut the bolsters out to make it more comfortable for me, so I guess I love to live dangerously.

But everything went according to plan and looks perfect and beautiful, so yay hey fuckin’ A!

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, tonight I installed a TRD duckbill spoiler on my BRZ. I got it in black and it’s looks fukkin’ dope. To be fair, it’s just the same exact spoiler that comes stock on the GR86 Premium, but since BRZs don’t have that option, you have to roll your own. You also can’t just order the Toyota OEM part, you need to order the JDM OEM aftermarket kit which includes the templates you need to drill the mounting holes. Of course, some people mount it without drilling, but it’s easier to misalign it that way, and quite frankly it’s nowhere near as secure on the trunk no matter what anyone says, so drilling is the way to go IMO. Your car though? Do what you like, it’s all good, but mounting it properly isn’t really that hard, you just have to take your time and not rush things. All told, it took me about an hour and a half, maybe two at most from start to finish. I won’t bore you with the details or give a detailed DIY, but I would suggest checking out the following vid from Kevin Vo at Driven.Media (bro, thanks for the super helpful vid) which explains it extremely well and is what I used as my basic guide. I also can actually read the Japanese directions, so I used them as a guide as well.

Once I had it mounted, I won’t lie, I totally got a mod boner because it looks so good IMO and really adds a feature that makes the car look just that much more complete and aggressive. It’s one of those things that if you don’t have it you maybe don’t think you need it or that everything already looks fine, but then you add it and a lightbulb goes off in your head and you’re like, “Aw yeah!”. Or maybe not. Some people don’t like how it looks. GASP! Yeah, they exist. (Just busting balls. It’s totally cool if someone doesn’t like it.) In any case, if you want to add a bit of spice to your car, then I would check these out. They’re not overly expensive (I think I paid about $350 or so.) and you can get them from quite a few retailers if you hop online. I bought mine from Import Image Racing because I’ve ordered a few other things from them in the past and they’ve always been straight-up honest with no bullshit or hassle (BTW, they have no relation to me or my blog whatsoever – I’ve just have had a good experience with them.), but there are likely other good retailers as well, so just do your homework and go with whoever looks best to you.

I have been waiting quite a while to put the spoiler on as it’s been sitting in my garage for a couple months now waiting for the weather to clear, and then to also get the hail damage fixed, so I’m really happy it’s done now and that I can finally enjoy it plus share it with you guys as well, which I was looking forward to. Hope you like it and maybe want one of your own now. Here’s a few more snaps of it, and have a great week!
