Old Skool

Hey there, how goes it? Surprised? Boo! Happy belated Halloween! Tonight, I’ve got a bit of content to share with you that I hope you enjoy. This’ll be the first of two posts of images I’ve taken recently with my new (old) Nikon F3, which I bought a couple months back. You may remember me mentioning I normally shot an F4s for my 35mm film work. Well, after owning it for nearly 15 years I decided to sell it off and bought the F3 to replace it. Why? Simple, I wanted something smaller and lighter to shoot with because, as fantastic a camera as the F4s is, it’s a fairly chunky, heavy beastie, plus the lenses for it are as well, and I got tired of carrying it around – especially over long days of shooting/walking around. I guess I’m getting old, but realistically I also felt that having a smaller, handier camera to shoot with would be more inspiring and less limiting in a wider variety of situations. I used to own a Canon A-1 that was just one of the most inspiring, transparent cameras to shoot with, so I wanted something similar, but more professionally oriented and the F3 was it. I could have gotten the Canon equivalent, the New F-1, however, when it comes to manual focus professional cameras, the F3 is considered one of, if not the, best 35mm cameras you can buy. So I bought one.

The photo above was from one of the first two rolls of film I put through the F3 and was taken at a car show a couple months back in a nearby town. Part of the show was inside this awesomely moody old factory with fantastic lighting, and the result is what you see here. There’s a few other shots from the same show that’re interesting as well, but I haven’t had a chance to edit them, and this is the best of the bunch anyway. For the photo nerds, this was shot with the F3 and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-S lens on basic Fujifilm 400 color film processed by Dwayne’s Photo. I scanned the negatives myself and edited them in Lightroom same I do with my digital work. This is what’s know as a hybrid workflow and it’s what I prefer because at this point I have far more Lightroom/Photoshop experience than I do darkroom printing experience, plus I don’t have the space for a darkroom anyway.

And that’s that. The next post will just be some photos of the BRZ taken on the way home from an evening drive. Same camera setup and film. Hope you enjoy them as well, take care!
